Glasses and Fitness

Its that time of the year again, when the campus is teeming with people walking around taking or giving orientation speeches, meeting friends after the holidays, going to one of the zillion offices to haggle with some adminstrative-type, etc. Basically, if you step out on any of the streets in the campus at certain times of the day, you will be caught in a deluge of undergrads with a few grads thrown in for variety.

As usual, I was walking by myself and being dead bored, I decided to play my old game of guessing other people's traits from their faces, gait, clothing, etc. I gave up doing this in India long ago because I kept arriving at combinations of stereotypes like, "That guy looks like a holier-than-thou urban partying-type," or "That girl looks like a typical studious conservative telugu girl who works hard and makes her parents proud with good marks," and so on and so forth. I accept that I was probably wrong most of the time, but anyway, my point is that I can't do things the same way in the US because I can't differentiate American features as well as I can with Indians. That makes it more interesting, actually.

While I was engaged in my guessing game, it suddenly struck me that I kept analyzing women wearing glasses. I don't know what quirk of my subconscious made me do that, but I was thinking, "That girl can probably knock me out in an intellectual conversation," or "That's a self-assured confident woman who knows her differential equations," etc. So much for guys-don't-make-passes-at-girls-who-wear-glasses. If I were an American undergrad I would be making passes only at women wearing glasses... or so I believed at that moment.

And then it happened that I passed by the window-studded wall of the treadmill room of the fitness center. A brief digression. In India, I noticed that most people only go to gyms to take the edge off the flab and there are only a few who are religious in their fitness and diet regimes. However, in the US, there is a good percentage of people who are very particular about these things and work hard at keeping their bodies in perfect shape.

So, when you pass a fitness center in the US, the odds are you'll see some really gorgeous women - and handsome men, for that matter. Hence, I'll admit that my staring this time was not for analysis but merely to gawk. Now, I'm not the type to stare at women usually, so I quickly reddened and turned my eyes back on the path, only to see that every single person near me irrespective of age, gender and sexual orientation had slowed their walking pace and were staring at those same windows.

Relieved that I am not a lecher but merely a normal human being, I pondered the eternal question: glasses girl or fitness center girl? Brains or looks? Which quality do you first look for? It's like asking Joey Tribioni to choose between Food and Sex.

Oh well, the point is moot for me anyway, given I speak to members of the opposite sex (face to face) for, like, 20 minutes a week in my current situation. But what about you, dear reader? What's you preference, brains or looks? Let us say, for arguments sake, you can't have both.

Cheers,
Prashanth.

Here is a different way to put your question: Would you prefer a foolish-good looking or an ugly-intelligent person? I think the answer is much more obvious that way.

Foolish words burn the heart more than ugly looks!

More than just brains, you want someone who is realistic and down to earth. The charm of worldly things is only temporary.

I pretty much agree with what anonymous said even though the truth is that like most guys I would be initially attracted more to a good looking woman than say an intelligent one who isnt.

Prashanth said...

Anon,
That was very philosophical. You like things in black and white, don't you? :)

Intern,
Who on earth is Clive Owens?

Su,
Ah, you said "initially". Very diplomatic!

"So much for guys-don't-make-passes-at-girls-who-wear-glasses"...haha

The best thing about your q is that both qualities are completely open to perception...an intelligent or good looking individual for me may not resonate the same way with someone else. Everyone can be intelligent/beautiful in someone else's eyes. Perception is a great leveller.

That said, I'd digress and go for beauty--of the heart (figuratively). Compassion and generosity would rank highest on my list.

But...if the man in question were, say, andy roddick, any and all exceptions would have to be made :)

Prashanth said...

Alraqs,
This is eerie. I agree with you 100%. Almost everyone agrees that beauty is subjective, but I for one believe that intelligence is also subjective. The so-called intelligence quotient is hogwash. And your "ranking system" is exactly the same as mine! What are the odds of that!

Intern,
I really don't know Clive Owens. I'm better at keeping track of actresses than actors :P

Artful Badger said...

Clive Owens, I think he is the latest one all these girls are having a crush on. What about Colin Farrel, isn't he a favorite, but, he smokes and is quite a philanderer one hears :D...
I don't think intelligence is subjective per se, but, perceived intelligence is subjective!

You can be beautiful and be a jerk,
You can be intelligent and be a twerp,
But if you are nice to me, I'll be nice to you,
If you aren't an asshole, I won't be one too.

I think the more intangible aspects contribute more to how much you enjoy the company of the person than beauty/intelligence. Friendliness, honesty..(refer Miss World for more)..

As compared to Beauty and Intelligence, I would prefer an ok looking girl who can speak intelligently over an extremely attractive one who is dumb, for the longer term.
Btw, I have never looked at a girl and thought, 'Mein gott, she can do some solid diff. eqs.'
But I have thought, 'Mein gott, that thing can't add 2 numbers howmuchever it tries' and
' With a ego this big, who needs nuclear weapons'

Prashanth said...

Nice poem. You ought to try your hand at poetry!

Anonymous said...

Oh well! Never mind if you don't know Clive Owens. Now you do!

He is the one guy every girl has a crush on and don't mind at all if you don't know. You'll be so on top of these things soon enough. I say, save this post and the comments, because you will then look at this and wish you were the same! :D

Cheers!

University town blinds u pacha!! Americans are typically some of the most obese people in the world. All those double cheese burgers take their toll. In india, students are too busy to work out. In US, american students are jobless, so they workout. Get out of the univ and take a look. Go to a subway joint and take a look. Am sure that u can see quite a few Jarred(i think thats the guys name) wannabes.

as for beauty or brains...hehe forget it guys. u may end up with a girl who has neither. Beauty is a rarity among indian arya-vysya girls. as for brains.....heheheheh....its a tuff ask!!. u want a girl with spex....no probs. with big butts....even more easy(arya-vysya girls). u know what....finally it does not matter. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. and u can always find intelligence in all people. just dont expect girls to be a scifi/fantasy nut or a computer geek or a sports fanatic. forget IIT girls for a while and take a look outside. Trust me guys...beauty nor brains matter...only a good heart does!!!!(yeah yeah...i am married.)

luv

Hear, Hear! My bro's wisdom is impeccable, as always :)

The heart is more important than the looks or the brains.

Yeah, I am perfectly aware of the fact that a large percentage of Americans are obese. A friend of mine once said that in the US everything is double the size of what we are used to!! However, I don't think that takes away anything from what I said in this post.

Dear bro, you seem to have made up your mind that I will be married to an ugly arya vysyan girl with a big butt and no regard for science fiction or bridge or whatever. I guess this is where I go down on my knees and pray!

Prashanth said...

Intern,
In case you haven't noticed, the tone of my post is bantering. I don't seriously expect anyone to say that they are interesting only in good looking women!

Sudip,
Welcome! After I see Mr.Owens I'll decide whether he's worth being jealous of.

Prashanth said...

I did want to hear everyone's views on this, even if I wasn't quite serious in this post.

Anonymous said...

I have to say, the guy is totally impressive. So much so he doesn't have to try.
You will need help if you are jealous of him :D

hey Guys!

Well any topic that involves "men" and "women" is bound to invole ME. Because Mars and Venus aliens are my forte.

Allright, Prashu, sometimes great minds think alike..(urs and mine ofcourse.. because i had a similar thought brooding time regarding the same topic! obviously more from the girl's point of view..)

There are two things that describe this 'attractiveness'. A person who is beautiful need not be 'attractive'.

Lets take the filmdom examples.. Katrina Kaif has a great body and is supposedly 'beautiful'.. but invariably if u see her and rani mukherjee(who is short, dark, and is plump).. rani gives out a different charisma around herself (her smile, her bubbly personality, and mainly her beautifully expressive eyes). So guys.. invariably.. I do know that good looks is the first initial point.. but i wonder if the goodlooks that is backed by a good personality is what makes one different from another!(making one more attractive than the other)

What do u think?

About the workout thingy I have a completely different view about it..shall write a loooong post on these people's dietary habits very soon..just waiting to get the time :(
About six pack abs vis a vis cerebrum I'll say brains please. Now how long will a stunning face engage me..a few days, maybe months or maybe if he is real cute years...And then when both of us are old and gray I'd have lost the very basis on which I liked him in the first place. Rather than regret it then, I might as well choose the brains wisely :). But what I have in mind is a tall order...he has to impress daddy too :)

Anonymous said...

in case of guys.. i strongly believe looks and brains dont go together.

I hav been known to stumble on shallow hearted casanovas from time to time.. I have yet to believe there actually exists a man who can be ok looking who can possess the qualities of a good manly personality.. Invariably most act macho but arent... and i end up becomin their second mummy which is so.. eugh!

Has nothing to do with this discussion:
Does anybody know what AV Rangarajan is upto?

Prashanth said...

I spoke with Ranga on the phone just after new year's day. Nothing new or significant from his end, as fas as I know. He's busy with grad school work as usual, and he's happy with his advisor. He hasn't been to India in a while and he's not sure if he can make it this summer either.

Anonymous said...

I have lost touch with ranga totally. Where is he now?

Prashanth said...

Ranga is in University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Er... who is this?

Artful Badger said...

looks like we are having quite a psbb reunion..
so who is the new entrant?

Artful Badger said...

Somehow when I read the post I again, I just felt you were sight adduchifying. :D..

Prashanth said...

That may well be true ;)

SP,
First things first..why were you desparately trying to defend urself?
"Now, I'm not the type to stare at women usually, so I quickly reddened and turned my eyes back on the path,..."
"Relieved that I am not a lecher..."
"given I speak to members of the opposite sex (face to face) for, like, 20 minutes a week in my current situation...."
Ramani's last comment just hit the nail on the head..
So much for maintaining the "the goody-two-shoes" demeanour and for who and for what?
I get so peeved when I hear girls say 'I don't normally speak to guys, but blah di blah'. And when I ask them why they gawk at me as if I landed from a whore house!! Get a life!! And I am way to furious to type any more..lest I say something that should defile the sanctity of ur dear blog!

Artful Badger said...

[SP] Do you have any preferences for your final rites? Any last wishes? What would you like on your tombstone -
Here lies SP

Prashanth said...

Wow kk... you should know that I was constantly made fun of in college for talking to girls more than guys, and I never thought it was something to defend myself about. But leching, on the other hand is an accusation to defend from, and I thought that if I gave that impression I ought to dispel it.

Intern,
Very sweet of you to defend me and all, but kk and I have been having a go at each other since forever :) and we quite enjoy it.

Prashanth and Ramani:

I (Male) am the one that asked about Ranga. You both don't quite know me. I know you guys though, because you were so popular in IIT classes!

I remember interacting with Ramani few times, but he kept forgetting me though... One thing that I learnt from that is never to forget anybody :)

Prashanth said...

Uahahahaaa... popular in the IIT classes? ROTFL... I didn't know or speak to anyone outside of my school friends!

Who are you, dude? You make good jokes...

Ok, Mr.Reminiscences-From-The-Satyamurthy-IIT-Class, you've had your little gag and established yourself as ace joker. You can tell us who you are now.

SP~ you don't have to be an American undergrad to make passes at girls who wear glasses.. ahem.. where is this thing going?? if you get into trouble and need to be bailed out, i don't know you..

coming back to your question, your observation is rather incisive, girls who wear glasses are rather (might i use the use the word )*hot*..

Nag

Artful Badger said...

[nag] that depends on how the girl wearing the glasses looks..
btw..are you called Nag or you simply a nag..
