Table for one, please

It happened again.

I walked into a restaurant, and said those words. And they had to ask, with raised eyebrow, "Just one?"

What is it with these Americans? If you have lunch alone, is there something wrong with you? I'm a poor Indian graduate student... this is hardly unusual for me, anywhere.

In India, if you saw a guy working late in his lab on a friday night, you would think, "That's one hard-working guy." Here, if you see the same, you're supposed to think, "Loser." The culture conditions you to think like that.

Wake up, America. You can't complain about offshoring when party culture rules work culture in your midst.

Btw, Jorge Cham knows where to hit the humour nail:

Say Cheese,
Prashanth.

I do that all the time! Its only in the weekends that I go out with other poeple to eat. I dont think its that strange either.

I think most grad students would echo this sentiment. I eat alone and often read a book or papers at the table. If they think I am a loser, Ce'st la vie..

SP, I understand what you mean, and agree with it, to a large extent.

I don't go through the "Just one?" experience on a regular basis, though. Much too poor to afford restaurants, alas! Especially with the (imperative) automobile draining every bit of my finances (peanuts).

I really don't agree with the off-shoring bit, though. I don't think off shoring is occurring because of the under-productivity of the American. I would call it "corporate greed". And it's worked out for some in the third world.

We Indian graduate students work like dogs because we have no life. Little other reason.

I'm surprized ... that anyone would be surprized at Table for one!!!
It's very very common.
I do that all the time ...
never have anyone raised an eyebrow.

Probably you misread the expression ...

America is incresingly growing a single's country ... Its very surprizing that anyone would react that way.

Anyway ... I had to say that its very common to ask for a single table ... so that anyone not from here doesnt have an impression that table for one is wierd. It's very common!!!!

Rap,
I didn't mean that American underproductivity is a reason for offshoring... I'm just saying that Americans have no right to complain about offshoring because of it.

And, give me a call sometime dude. Its been a while since we talked.

Intern,
Well... they really did say, "Just one?", and it happened more than once, and I didn't imagine the raised eyebrow either...

well ..
it's very common here ..
Not only I do that all the time ...
including seeing movies alone ...

but I know so many people who take lunch alone ... and I've seen so many people doing that during the noon-hours!!!

so well...
different people... different experiences -
i guess that summarizes it!!!
